Finding Hypercliques Faster Than Brute Force
Abstract · v1
We show that for any fixed , there exists such that, given a -uniform hypergraph on vertices, one can count the number of -hypercliques in in time. This refutes the hyperclique conjecture of Lincoln, Vassilevska Williams, and Williams (SODA 2018). Our result follows from the uniform construction of a family of arithmetic circuits of size for the -hyperclique tensor, a natural higher-order generalization of the matrix multiplication tensor. We obtain two corollaries. First, for every , there exists such that Max-SAT can be solved in time. Second, for every , there exists such that arithmetic progressions of length in subsets of can be detected in time. Both corollaries refute other prominent conjectures in the literature.
