Abstract

OpenAI proved that for every sufficiently large n there are n points in the unit square all of whose triangles have area at least c n^(-2+eta), with an explicit but extremely small eta (of order 10^(-235)). Subsequent public work lowered the cost of the construction, the latest claimed exponent being eta = 2/100866719, about 1.9810^(-8). We introduce two changes. First, the digit base is taken to be a multiple of the label prime r and the main modulus is h = r B^(k-1) instead of B^k; this reduces the ratio h/tau between the modulus and the excluded determinant window from about B to about r, which allows the extension degree d = 3. Second, the norm polynomial is placed in the digits by a digit-wise convolution along the Frobenius expansion of the exponents, with a trace digit in a polynomial basis, giving k = 1440 positions. The result is Delta(n) >= c n^(-2+eta) with eta = 1/177022 > 5.6410^(-6), for every sufficiently large n. The finite identities are checked by exact computation in the ancillary files.

Introduction

For a finite set P⊂[0,1]2P \subset[0,1]^2 with ∣P∣≥3|P| \ge3 let Δ(P)\Delta(P) be the least area of a triangle with vertices in PP, and let Δ(n)\Delta(n) be the maximum of Δ(P)\Delta(P) over nn-point sets. Komlós, Pintz and Szemerédi proved Δ(n)≫(log⁡n)/n2\Delta(n) \gg(\log n)/n^2 [4]. OpenAI [1] proved a power improvement Δ(n)≥c1n−2+η\Delta(n) \ge c_1 n^{-2+\eta} with η=2/(45435k+16)\eta= 2/(45435k + 16), k=T2+1k = T^2 + 1, T=(M3)T = \binom{M}{3}, M=(16341)M = \binom{163}{41}, so that η≈10−235.5\eta\approx10^{-235.5}. Their construction samples integral columns whose residues modulo a main modulus hh carry a determinant obstruction coming from a field norm, together with an auxiliary cap modulo a second prime qq, and deletes the few bad triples.

Public follow-up work reduced the parameters inside the same framework: Blinov [2] lowered the extension degree to d=5d = 5 using row-dependent digit lengths, label tags, a fresh-digit collision bound and a slab version of the auxiliary cap, and the Euler team [3] obtained the claimed exponent η=2/100866719\eta= 2/100866719 with k=408781k = 408781 and a smaller lift box.

Theorem 1.1. There are c>0c > 0 and n0n_0 such that for every integer n≥n0n \ge n_0,

Δ(n)≥cn−2+η,η=1177022.\Delta(n) \ge c n^{-2+\eta}, \qquad\eta= \frac{1}{177022}.

The two new ingredients are the following.

Composite modulus. Let rr be the label prime and choose the digit base B=rB2B=rB_{2} with B2B_{2} prime. The main modulus is h=rBk−1h=rB^{k-1}. Since B≡0B \equiv0 modulo rr, the part of the determinant above the digit position k−1k-1 reduces modulo rr to the single designated coefficient, whose residue is the field norm. Distinct labels then exclude every representative of absolute value at most τ≈Bk−1/2\tau\approx B^{k-1}/2, while h/τ≈2rh/\tau\approx2r instead of ≈2B\approx2B. The price of a label collision becomes r2γ⋅r−dr^{2\gamma}\cdot r^{-d} and d=3d=3 suffices (§ 6).

Frobenius digits. The norm of the Vandermonde product, N(V)=∏tVrt\mathrm{N}(V)=\prod_{t}V^{r^{t}}, has monomials whose exponents have rr-adic digits in {0,1,2}\{0,1,2\}, with a coefficient that factors over the digits. We place the monomials in the digit positions by a mixed-radix convolution in which each lower Frobenius digit is handled by a fixed three-row design of radix 66 (Table 1), the most significant digit by a design whose rows 1 and 3 never reach the target together (Table 2), and the descent to FrF_{r} by a trace digit of radix 2d−12d-1 in a polynomial basis. With d=3d=3 this uses k=1440k=1440 positions.

Everything else follows the framework of [1] with the row-dependent digit lengths and the slab cap of [2] and the smaller lift box of [3]. We give proofs of every statement that changes, citing [1] for the lattice-point counts and the weight bounds of the auxiliary cap, whose proofs apply with the changes indicated.

Conventions. A≪BA \ll B means ∣A∣≤CB|A| \le CB with CC depending only on the fixed parameters d=3d=3 and k=1440k=1440, never on the growing prime rr. Lengths are Euclidean. All logarithms are natural.

Frobenius digits

The digit design

For (x,y,z)∈{0,1,2}3(x,y,z) \in\{0,1,2\}^{3} let w(x,y,z)w(x,y,z) be the sign of the permutation 0↦x0 \mapsto x, 1↦y1 \mapsto y, 2↦z2 \mapsto z when {x,y,z}={0,1,2}\{x,y,z\}=\{0,1,2\}, and w(x,y,z)=0w(x,y,z)=0 otherwise. Then, for commuting indeterminates,

∑x,y,zw(x,y,z)XxYyZz=det⁡(111XYZX2Y2Z2)=(Y−X)(Z−X)(Z−Y).(1)\sum_{x,y,z} w(x,y,z)X^{x}Y^{y}Z^{z} = \det\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 & 1 \\ X & Y & Z \\ X^{2} & Y^{2} & Z^{2} \end{pmatrix} = (Y-X)(Z-X)(Z-Y). \tag*{(1)}

A design is a triple of finite lists O1,O2,O3\mathcal{O}_{1},\mathcal{O}_{2},\mathcal{O}_{3} of options; each option oo carries a value x(o)∈{0,1,2}x(o) \in\{0,1,2\}, a height u(o)∈Z≥0u(o) \in\mathbb{Z}_{\ge0} and a sign ϵ(o)∈{±1}\epsilon(o) \in\{\pm1\}. We use the design D6\mathcal{D}_{6} of Table 1, with target κ=5\kappa=5.

Lemma 2.1. The design D6\mathcal{D}_{6} has the following properties.

(D1) For every (x,y,z)∈{0,1,2}3(x,y,z) \in\{0,1,2\}^{3},

∑oi∈Oi, (x(o1),x(o2),x(o3))=(x,y,z)u(o1)+u(o2)+u(o3)=5ϵ(o1)ϵ(o2)ϵ(o3)=w(x,y,z).\sum_{\substack{o_i\in\mathcal{O}_i,\ (x(o_1),x(o_2),x(o_3))=(x,y,z)\\u(o_1)+u(o_2)+u(o_3)=5}} \epsilon(o_1)\epsilon(o_2)\epsilon(o_3)=w(x,y,z).
(D2)For all options, ∣u(o1)+u(o2)+u(o3)−5∣≤5.(D2)\quad\text{For all options, } \lvert u(o_1)+u(o_2)+u(o_3)-5\rvert\le5.
(D3)All heights are at most 4.(D3)\quad\text{All heights are at most 4.}

Proof. A finite check of the 4⋅3⋅4=484 \cdot3 \cdot4=48 option triples; see anc/check_design.py. For example, for (x,y,z)=(0,1,2)(x,y,z)=(0,1,2) the option triples have heights (1,2,0)(1,2,0) and (3,2,0)(3,2,0); only the second sums to 55, with sign ++. For (0,0,0)(0,0,0) the triples summing to 55 are (1,1,3)(1,1,3) with sign −- and (3,1,1)(3,1,1) with sign ++, which cancel.

For the most significant digit we use the design T7T_7 of Table 2, with target 77.

Lemma 2.2. The design T7T_7 satisfies (D1) with 5 replaced by 7, and moreover:

(T1) no option of row 1 and option of row 3 have heights summing to 7;

(T2) the options of height 0 in rows 1 and 3 have value x=2x=2, and row 2 has no option of height 0.

The rows of D6D_6 have options of height 0 only with value x=2x=2.

Proof. A finite check; see anc/check_design.py. For (T1), the heights in rows 1 and 3 are {0,1,4}\{0,1,4\} and {0,2,4,5}\{0,2,4,5\}, whose sums avoid 7.

Field, labels and the norm

Fix d=3d=3. Let r>6dr>6d be a prime, F=Fr\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{F}_r, and K=Frd=F[θ]K=\mathbb{F}_{r^d}=\mathbb{F}[\theta] with θ\theta a root of an irreducible cubic. Write cμ(ξ)c_\mu(\xi), μ=0,1,2\mu=0,1,2, for the coordinates of ξ∈K\xi\in K in the basis 1,θ,θ21,\theta,\theta^2, and Tr⁡\operatorname{Tr} for the trace K→FK\to\mathbb{F}. For e=(e0,e1,e2)∈{0,1,2}3e=(e_0,e_1,e_2)\in\{0,1,2\}^3 put ξ[e]=ξe0+e1r+e2r2=∏t(ξrt)et\xi^{[e]}=\xi^{e_0+e_1r+e_2r^2}=\prod_t(\xi^{r^t})^{e_t}. For labels ξ1,ξ2,ξ3∈K×\xi_1,\xi_2,\xi_3\in K^\times let V=(ξ2−ξ1)(ξ3−ξ1)(ξ3−ξ2)V=(\xi_2-\xi_1)(\xi_3-\xi_1)(\xi_3-\xi_2) and N(V)=∏t<dVrt∈FN(V)=\prod_{t<d}V^{r^t}\in\mathbb{F}. Since dd is odd, N(−v)=−N(v)N(-v)=-N(v), so N(V)N(V) is alternating in the labels; it is nonzero when the labels are distinct.

Positions and residues

Use the mixed radix with digit weights

Wtr⁡=1,W0=5,W1=30,W2=180,W_{\operatorname{tr}}=1,\qquad W_0=5,\qquad W_1=30,\qquad W_2=180,

that is, a trace digit of radix 2d−1=52d-1=5, two Frobenius digits of radix 6 (digits t=0,1t=0,1, design D6D_6) and a most significant Frobenius digit (t=2(t=2, design T7T_7). Write Oi(t)\mathcal{O}^{(t)}_i for the options of row ii in the design of digit tt. For a row ii and an option word o=(o0,o1,o2)o=(o_0,o_1,o_2) with ot∈Oi(t)o_t\in\mathcal{O}^{(t)}_i put

x(o)=(x(o0),x(o1),x(o2)),ϵ(o)=∏tϵ(ot),H(o)=∑t=02u(ot)Wt.x(o)=(x(o_0),x(o_1),x(o_2)),\qquad\epsilon(o)=\prod_t\epsilon(o_t),\qquad H(o)=\sum_{t=0}^{2}u(o_t)W_t.

The terms of the three rows, their positions and their functions K→FK\to\mathbb{F} are:

rowtermpositionfunction
1(o1,μ)(o^1,\mu), 0≤μ≤20 \le\mu\le2μ+H(o1)\mu+ H(o^1)ϵ(o1)cμ(ξ[x(o1)])\epsilon(o^1)c_\mu(\xi^{[x(o^1)]})
2(o2,ν)(o^2,\nu), 0≤ν≤20 \le\nu\le2ν+H(o2)\nu+ H(o^2)ϵ(o2)cν(ξ[x(o2)])\epsilon(o^2)c_\nu(\xi^{[x(o^2)]})
3(o3,s)(o^3,s), 0≤s≤40 \le s \le44−s+H(o3)4-s+H(o^3)ϵ(o3)Tr⁡(θsξ[x(o3)])\epsilon(o^3)\operatorname{Tr}(\theta^s\xi^{[x(o^3)]})

Put

X∗=4⋅Wtr+5W0+5W1+7W2=1439,k=X∗+1=1440.X^* = 4 \cdot W_{\mathrm{tr}} + 5W_0 + 5W_1 + 7W_2 = 1439,\qquad k = X^* + 1 = 1440.

The largest position is 2+4⋅5+4⋅30+4⋅180=8622+4\cdot5+4\cdot30+4\cdot180=862 in row 1, 2+2⋅5+2⋅30+6⋅180=11522+2\cdot5+2\cdot30+6\cdot180=1152 in row 2 and 4+4⋅5+4⋅30+5⋅180=10444+4\cdot5+4\cdot30+5\cdot180=1044 in row 3, all below k−1=1439k-1=1439. For a label ξ∈K×\xi\in K^\times, a row ii and a position 0≤v<k0\le v<k, let ρi,v(ξ)∈F\rho_{i,v}(\xi)\in\mathbb{F} be the sum of the functions of all row-ii terms at position vv (zero if there are none), except that we add the control

ρ2,0(ξ)=φ(ξ)N(ξ)2,φ(ξ)=c0(ξ);(2)\rho_{2,0}(\xi)=\varphi(\xi)N(\xi)^2,\qquad\varphi(\xi)=c_0(\xi); \tag*{(2)}

by (T2) row 2 has no term at position 0. By (T2) and Lemma 2.2, the only terms at position 0 are, in row 1, the word of value (2,2,2)(2,2,2) with μ=0\mu=0, of function c0(ξ[2,2,2])=c0(N(ξ)2)=N(ξ)2c_0(\xi^{[2,2,2]})=c_0(N(\xi)^2)=N(\xi)^2, and, in row 3, the word of value (2,2,2)(2,2,2) with s=4s=4, of function −Tr⁡(θ4N(ξ)2)-\operatorname{Tr}(\theta^4N(\xi)^2). Hence

(ρ1,0,ρ2,0,ρ3,0)(ξ)=N(ξ)2(1,φ(ξ),−Tr⁡(θ4)).(3)(\rho_{1,0},\rho_{2,0},\rho_{3,0})(\xi)=N(\xi)^2(1,\varphi(\xi),-\operatorname{Tr}(\theta^4)). \tag*{(3)}

Lemma 2.3 (Encoding). For all labels ξ1,ξ2,ξ3∈K×\xi_1,\xi_2,\xi_3\in K^\times,

∑p1+p2+p3=k−1det⁡(ρi,pi(ξj))i,j=13=6d N(V)=18 N(V)(4)\sum_{p_1+p_2+p_3=k-1}\det(\rho_{i,p_i}(\xi_j))_{i,j=1}^{3}=6d\,N(V)=18\,N(V) \tag*{(4)}

in F\mathbb{F}, the sum running over 0≤pi<k0\le p_i<k. In particular the left side is nonzero when the labels are distinct.

Proof. Selection. Consider three terms (o1,μ)(o^1,\mu), (o2,ν)(o^2,\nu), (o3,s)(o^3,s) of rows 1, 2, 3 with positions summing to X∗X^*. Put δtr=μ+ν−s∈[−4,4]\delta_{\mathrm{tr}}=\mu+\nu-s\in[-4,4] and δt=u(ot1)+u(ot2)+u(ot3)−κt\delta_t=u(o_t^1)+u(o_t^2)+u(o_t^3)-\kappa_t with κ0=κ1=5\kappa_0=\kappa_1=5, κ2=7\kappa_2=7; by (D2), δ0,δ1∈[−5,5]\delta_0,\delta_1\in[-5,5]. Then 0=δtr+5δ0+30δ1+180δ20=\delta_{\mathrm{tr}}+5\delta_0+30\delta_1+180\delta_2. Reduction modulo 5 gives δtr=0\delta_{\mathrm{tr}}=0, then reduction modulo 6 gives δ0=0\delta_0=0, then δ1=0\delta_1=0, and finally δ2=0\delta_2=0. Conversely these equalities give the target. So the contributing triples of terms are exactly those with μ+ν=s\mu+\nu=s and, in each digit tt, heights summing to κt\kappa_t.

The control. The control (2) contributes only through triples with p2=0p_2=0 and p1+p3=X∗p_1+p_3=X^*, where p1,p3p_1,p_3 carry terms of rows 1 and 3 (otherwise a residue is 0). For such terms put δtr′=μ+(4−s)−4∈[−4,2]\delta'_{\mathrm{tr}}=\mu+(4-s)-4\in[-4,2] and δt′=u(ot1)+u(ot3)−κt\delta'_t=u(o_t^1)+u(o_t^3)-\kappa_t, with δ0′,δ1′∈[−5,3]\delta'_0,\delta'_1\in[-5,3] because the heights of D6D_6 in rows 1 and 3 lie in [0,4][0,4] (D3). As above δtr′=δ0′=δ1′=δ2′=0\delta'_{\mathrm{tr}}=\delta'_0=\delta'_1=\delta'_2=0, so the top heights of rows 1 and 3 would sum to 7, contradicting (T1). Hence the control does not contribute.

Expansion. By multilinearity of the determinant in its rows, the left side of (4) equals

∑ϵ(o1)ϵ(o2)ϵ(o3)det⁡((cμ(ξj[a])cν(ξj[b])Tr⁡(θsξj[c])))j=1,2,3,\sum\epsilon(o^1)\epsilon(o^2)\epsilon(o^3)\det\left(\begin{pmatrix} c_\mu(\xi_j^{[a]})\\ c_\nu(\xi_j^{[b]})\\ \operatorname{Tr}(\theta^s\xi_j^{[c]}) \end{pmatrix}\right)_{j=1,2,3},

over the contributing triples, where a=x(o1)a=x(o^1), b=x(o2)b=x(o^2), c=x(o3)c=x(o^3). Fix (a,b,c)(a,b,c). By (D1) for D6D_6 and T7T_7 applied digit by digit, the total sign of the option words with these values and digit sums κt\kappa_t is ∏tw(at,bt,ct)\prod_t w(a_t,b_t,c_t). For fixed (a,b,c)(a,b,c) the sum over μ+ν=s\mu+\nu=s is, expanding the determinant over permutations σ\sigma,

∑σsgn⁡(σ)∑s∑μ+ν=scμ(α)cν(β)Tr⁡(θsγ)=∑σsgn⁡(σ)Tr⁡(αβγ),\sum_{\sigma}\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)\sum_s\sum_{\mu+\nu=s}c_\mu(\alpha)c_\nu(\beta)\operatorname{Tr}(\theta^s\gamma)=\sum_{\sigma}\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)\operatorname{Tr}(\alpha\beta\gamma),

with α=ξσ(1)[a]\alpha=\xi_{\sigma(1)}^{[a]}, β=ξσ(2)[b]\beta=\xi_{\sigma(2)}^{[b]}, γ=ξσ(3)[c]\gamma=\xi_{\sigma(3)}^{[c]}, because αβ=∑μ,νcμ(α)cν(β)θμ+ν\alpha\beta=\sum_{\mu,\nu}c_\mu(\alpha)c_\nu(\beta)\theta^{\mu+\nu} and the trace is F\mathbb{F}-linear. Summing over (a,b,c)(a,b,c) and using that Frobenius is a ring endomorphism together with (1),

∑a,b,c∏tw(at,bt,ct)X[a]Y[b]Z[c]=∏t<d∑x,y,zw(x,y,z)(Xrt)x(Yrt)y(Zrt)z=∏t<dV(X,Y,Z)rt=NV(X,Y,Z).\begin{aligned} \sum_{a,b,c}\prod_t w(a_t,b_t,c_t)X^{[a]}Y^{[b]}Z^{[c]}=\prod_{t<d}\sum_{x,y,z}w(x,y,z)(X^{r^t})^x(Y^{r^t})^y(Z^{r^t})^z \\ &=\prod_{t<d}V(X,Y,Z)^{r^t}=N V(X,Y,Z). \end{aligned}

Hence the left side is

∑σsgn⁡(σ)Tr⁡(NV(ξσ(1),ξσ(2),ξσ(3)))=∑σsgn⁡(σ)2Tr⁡(NV)=6Tr⁡(NV)=6d NV,\sum_{\sigma}\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)\operatorname{Tr}(N V(\xi_{\sigma(1)},\xi_{\sigma(2)},\xi_{\sigma(3)}))=\sum_{\sigma}\operatorname{sgn}(\sigma)^2\operatorname{Tr}(N V)=6\operatorname{Tr}(N V)=6d\,N V,

since NVN V is alternating and lies in F\mathbb{F}. Finally 6d=186d=18 is invertible because r>18r>18. □\square

The identity is checked by exact computation for random labels in anc/check_encoding.py.

Let B2B_2 be a prime with Q<B2≤2QQ<B_2\le2Q, where Q=600k2r2MQ=600k^2r^2M (it exists for large rr by Bertrand’s postulate), and set

Then B=rB2>600k2r3M=100A0B=rB_2>600k^2r^3M=100A_0, so B−1≥100A0B-1\ge100A_0; also L3<B2L_3<B_2, B2≠rB_2\ne r, and

θ0:=B2rM2≤2(600k2r2M+1)rM2≤12.(7)\theta_0:=\frac{B_2r}{M^2}\le\frac{2(600k^2r^2M+1)r}{M^2}\le\frac{1}{2}. \tag*{(7)}

Moreover B≍r6B\asymp r^6, with constants depending only on kk.

Random columns

A column is drawn as follows. Choose a label ξ\xi uniformly in K×K^\times. For rows i=1,2i=1,2 and every position 0≤v<k0\le v<k, let di,vd_{i,v} be the unique integer in [1,r][1,r] congruent to ρi,v(ξ)\rho_{i,v}(\xi) modulo rr. For row 33 and every vv, choose d3,vd_{3,v} uniformly from the MM integers in [1,rM][1,rM] congruent to ρ3,v(ξ)\rho_{3,v}(\xi), independently. Put ci=∑v<kdi,vBvmod⁡hc_i=\sum_{v<k}d_{i,v}B^v\mathbin{\operatorname{mod}}h. Different columns use independent labels and digits. Since B≡0B\equiv0 modulo both primes, ci≡di,0c_i\equiv d_{i,0} modulo rr and modulo B2B_2. In particular c1≡N(ξ)2≠0c_1\equiv N(\xi)^2\ne0 (mod rr) by (3), and c1≡d1,0∈[1,r]c_1\equiv d_{1,0}\in[1,r] is a unit modulo B2B_2. By (3) the third row of CC mod rr is a multiple of the first, so CC mod rr always has rank at most two and r∣det⁡Cr\mid\det C; this is harmless, since the obstruction below only uses Hi≢0H_i\not\equiv0 (mod rr) and the divisor EE cancels in (11).

Lemma 3.1 (Obstruction). Let CC be the residue matrix of three such columns. If the three labels are distinct, then no integer in [−τ,τ][-\tau,\tau] is congruent to det⁡C\det C modulo hh.

Proof. Let C^\widehat{C} be the integer matrix with entries ∑vdi,v(j)Bv\sum_v d_{i,v}^{(j)}B^v and put F(Y)=det⁡(∑vdi,v(j)Yv)=∑eγeYeF(Y)=\det\left(\sum_v d_{i,v}^{(j)}Y^v\right)=\sum_e\gamma_eY^e. For each exponent ee and permutation, the positions in two rows determine the third, so ∣γe∣≤A0|\gamma_e|\le A_0. Write

F(B)=L0+Bk−1HiwithL0=∑e<k−1γeBeandHi=∑e≥k−1γeBe−k+1.F(B)=L_0+B^{k-1}H_i \quad\text{with}\quad L_0=\sum_{e<k-1}\gamma_eB^e\quad\text{and}\quad H_i=\sum_{e\ge k-1}\gamma_eB^{e-k+1}.

Since B−1≥100A0B-1\ge100A_0,

∣L0∣≤A0Bk−1−1B−1≤1100(Bk−1−1).|L_0|\le A_0\frac{B^{k-1}-1}{B-1}\le\frac{1}{100}(B^{k-1}-1).

Since B≡0(modr)B\equiv0\pmod r, Hi≡γk−1(modr)H_i\equiv\gamma_{k-1}\pmod r, and since every digit is congruent to its residue, Lemma 2.3 gives γk−1≡18N(V)≠0(modr)\gamma_{k-1}\equiv18N(V)\ne0\pmod r. Every integer t≡det⁡C≡F(B)(modh)t\equiv\det C\equiv F(B)\pmod h has the form

t=L0+Bk−1(Hi+rm)t=L_0+B^{k-1}(H_i+rm)

with m∈Zm\in\mathbb{Z}, and Hi+rm≠0H_i+rm\ne0. Hence

∣t∣≥Bk−1−∣L0∣>99100Bk−1>τ.|t|\ge B^{k-1}-|L_0|>\frac{99}{100}B^{k-1}>\tau.

Smith forms modulo hh

For a prime p∣hp\mid h let hp=pkph_p=p^{k_p} be the pp-part of hh (kr=kk_r=k, kB2=k−1k_{B_2}=k-1). By the Chinese remainder theorem Z/hZ=Z/hrZ×Z/hB2Z\mathbb{Z}/h\mathbb{Z}=\mathbb{Z}/h_r\mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}/h_{B_2}\mathbb{Z} and SL⁡3(Z/hZ)=∏pSL⁡3(Z/hpZ)\operatorname{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z}/h\mathbb{Z})=\prod_p\operatorname{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z}/h_p\mathbb{Z}). Since C11C_{11} is a unit modulo both primes, [1 Lemma 4.1] applies to CC mod hph_p and gives C≡Ppdiag⁡(1,pbp,pep)QpC\equiv P_p\operatorname{diag}(1,p^{b_p},p^{e_p})Q_p with 0≤bp≤ep≤kp0\le b_p\le e_p\le k_p, where bp≥jb_p\ge j if and only if all 2×22\times2 minors of CC vanish modulo pjp^j. Put D=∏ppbpD=\prod_p p^{b_p}, E=∏ppepE=\prod_p p^{e_p} and I=DEI=DE. Let Λ=ΛC\Lambda=\Lambda_C be the set of v∈Z3v\in\mathbb{Z}^3 whose reduction modulo hh lies in the row span of CC.

Lemma 3.2. [Z3:Λ]=I[\mathbb{Z}^3:\Lambda]=I, EZ3⊆ΛE\mathbb{Z}^3\subseteq\Lambda, and the orbit OC={GC:G∈SL⁡3(Z/hZ)}\mathcal{O}_C=\{GC:G\in\operatorname{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z}/h\mathbb{Z})\} satisfies

∣OC∣≥2164h8D3E2.|\mathcal{O}_C|\ge\frac{21}{64}\frac{h^8}{D^3E^2}.

For uniform GG, GCGC is uniform on OC\mathcal{O}_C, and all elements of OC\mathcal{O}_C have the row span and the determinant of CC. Moreover, for x∈Z3x\in\mathbb{Z}^3 write x⋅Λ=gZx\cdot\Lambda=g\mathbb{Z}; for every m∣hm\mid h, m∣gm\mid g if and only if Cx≡0(modm)Cx\equiv0\pmod m; and for m=∏ppjpm=\prod_p p^{j_p} with jp≤epj_p\le e_p the proportion of residues xx modulo mm with Cx≡0(modm)Cx\equiv0\pmod m is

∏pp−jp−max⁡(jp−bp,0).\prod_p p^{-j_p-\max(j_p-b_p,0)}.

Proof. For p∈{r,B2}p\in\{r,B_2\} put

Λp={v∈Z3:v mod hp∈row span of C mod hp}.\Lambda_p=\{v\in\mathbb{Z}^3:v\bmod h_p\in\text{row span of }C\bmod h_p\}.

By the Chinese remainder theorem, Λ=Λr∩ΛB2\Lambda=\Lambda_r\cap\Lambda_{B_2}, and OC\mathcal{O}_C is the product of the orbits of CC mod hrh_r and CC mod hB2h_{B_2}. For each prime pp, [1 Lemma 4.1 and Lemma 4.2], which are stated for a prime power modulus and need one unit entry, give: the row span modulo hph_p has hp3/pbp+eph_p^3/p^{b_p+e_p} elements, so

[Z3:Λp]=pbp+ep,pepZ3⊆Λp;[\mathbb{Z}^3:\Lambda_p]=p^{b_p+e_p},\qquad p^{e_p}\mathbb{Z}^3\subseteq\Lambda_p;

and

∣OC mod hp∣≥2164hp8p3bp+2ep.|\mathcal{O}_C\bmod h_p|\ge\frac{21}{64}\frac{h_p^8}{p^{3b_p+2e_p}}.

In the diagonal form, the proportion of xx modulo pjp^j, j≤epj\le e_p, with Cx≡0(modpj)Cx\equiv0\pmod{p^j} is p−j−max⁡(j−bp,0)p^{-j-\max(j-b_p,0)}, as in the proof of [1 Lemma 7.3]. Since the two indices are coprime,

[Z3:Λ]=∏p[Z3:Λp]=I,EZ3⊆⋂ppepZ3⊆Λ,∣OC∣=∏p∣OC mod hp∣,[\mathbb{Z}^3:\Lambda]=\prod_p[\mathbb{Z}^3:\Lambda_p]=I,\qquad E\mathbb{Z}^3\subseteq\bigcap_p p^{e_p}\mathbb{Z}^3\subseteq\Lambda,\qquad|\mathcal{O}_C|=\prod_p|\mathcal{O}_C\bmod h_p|,

and the proportions multiply. A uniform G∈SL⁡3(Z/hZ)G\in\operatorname{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z}/h\mathbb{Z}) has uniform components, so GCGC is uniform on OC\mathcal{O}_C, and left multiplication by GG preserves the row span and the determinant. Finally, for m∣hm\mid h the reduction of Λ\Lambda modulo mm is the row span of CC mod mm, because Λ⊇hZ3\Lambda\supseteq h\mathbb{Z}^3; hence m∣gm\mid g, that is x⋅v≡0(modm)x\cdot v\equiv0\pmod m for all v∈Λv\in\Lambda, holds if and only if xx is orthogonal modulo mm to the rows of CC, that is Cx≡0(modm)Cx\equiv0\pmod m.

Lemma 3.3. Fix the three labels. Then

E[D∣labels]≤2+6r1{rank⁡(C mod r)≤1}.\mathbb{E}[D\mid\text{labels}]\le2+6r\mathbf{1}\{\operatorname{rank}(C\bmod r)\le1\}.

Proof. Write b=bB2b=b_{B_2} and b′=brb'=b_r. Since pβ≤∑i=0βpip^\beta\le\sum_{i=0}^{\beta}p^i,

D≤∑j≥0∑j′≥0B2jrj′1{b≥j, b′≥j′}.D\le\sum_{j\ge0}\sum_{j'\ge0}B_2^j r^{j'}1\{b\ge j,\ b'\ge j'\}.

Condition on the first column and on the first entries of the second and third columns. As C11C_{11} is a unit modulo pp, bp≥jb_p\ge j implies the two congruences C3v≡C31C11−1C1v(modpj)C_{3v}\equiv C_{31}C_{11}^{-1}C_{1v}\pmod{p^j}, v=2,3v=2,3, whose right sides are now fixed. We use only these two bottom entries, which have fresh independent digits.

The prime B2B_2. Modulo B2jB_2^j only the digits at positions <j<j of an entry matter. The congruence modulo B2B_2 fixes d3,0d_{3,0} modulo B2B_2, hence fixes d3,0d_{3,0} since 1≤d3,0≤rM<B21\le d_{3,0}\le rM<B_2. Inductively, given the lower digits, the congruence modulo B2u+1B_2^{u+1} fixes d3,uB2u=ruB2ud3,ud_{3,u}B_2^u=r^uB_2^u d_{3,u} modulo B2u+1B_2^{u+1}, hence d3,ud_{3,u} modulo B2B_2 (as rr is invertible modulo B2B_2), hence d3,ud_{3,u}. Each digit has MM equally likely values, so the event b≥jb\ge j fixes the bottom digits at positions <j<j of both entries and has probability at most M−2jM^{-2j}.

The prime rr. The event b′≥1b'\ge1 is the deterministic event that CC mod rr has rank at most one. Write d3,u=ρ3,u+rmud_{3,u}=\rho_{3,u}+rm_u; the integers mum_u range over MM consecutive values, and r∣Mr\mid M, so mum_u mod rr is uniform. Since Bu=ruB2uB^u=r^uB_2^u, an entry is ∑ud3,uruB2u=∑uρ3,uruB2u+∑umuru+1B2u\sum_u d_{3,u}r^uB_2^u=\sum_u\rho_{3,u}r^uB_2^u+\sum_um_ur^{u+1}B_2^u. Its residue modulo rt+1r^{t+1} (1≤t≤k−11\le t\le k-1) is therefore the residue modulo rt+1r^{t+1} of a quantity determined by the residues ρ3,u\rho_{3,u} and the mum_u with u≤t−2u\le t-2, plus mt−1B2t−1rtm_{t-1}B_2^{t-1}r^t. As B2B_2 is invertible modulo rr, given the congruence of the entry modulo rtr^t and all mum_u with u≤t−2u\le t-2, the congruence modulo rt+1r^{t+1} (whose right side is fixed) holds for exactly one value of mt−1m_{t-1} mod rr, hence with conditional probability 1/r1/r. The same holds for the second entry, with its own independent mt−1m_{t-1}.

Joint bound. Here 0≤j≤k−10\le j\le k-1 and 0≤j′≤k0\le j'\le k. The event b≥jb\ge j depends only on the bottom digits at positions <j<j and fixes them; it costs at most M−2jM^{-2j}, and the congruences modulo rtr^t with t≤jt\le j then cost nothing more. Next condition, in the order t=j+1,…,j′−1t=j+1,\ldots,j'-1, on the congruence modulo rt+1r^{t+1}: it involves mt−1m_{t-1} with t−1≥jt-1\ge j, which is uniform modulo rr and independent of the event b≥jb\ge j and of all digits at positions ≤t−2\le t-2, so by the previous paragraph each step costs a factor 1/r1/r in each of the two entries. Therefore

Pr⁡(b≥j, b′≥j′)≤1{j′=0 or rank⁡(Cmodr)≤1}M−2jr−2max⁡(j′−1−j,0).\Pr(b\ge j,\ b'\ge j')\le1\{j'=0\text{ or }\operatorname{rank}(C\mathbin{\rm mod}r)\le1\}M^{-2j}r^{-2\max(j'-1-j,0)}.

The terms with j′=0j'=0 contribute at most ∑j(B2/M2)j≤2\sum_j(B_2/M^2)^j\le2. If rank⁡(Cmodr)≤1\operatorname{rank}(C\mathbin{\rm mod}r)\le1, the terms with j′≥1j'\ge1 contribute at most

∑j(B2/M2)j(∑j′=1j+1rj′+∑s≥1rj+1+sr−2s)≤∑j(B2/M2)j3rj+1=3r∑jϑ0j≤6r,\sum_j(B_2/M^2)^j\left(\sum_{j'=1}^{j+1}r^{j'}+\sum_{s\ge1}r^{j+1+s}r^{-2s}\right) \le\sum_j(B_2/M^2)^j3r^{j+1}=3r\sum_j\vartheta_0^j\le6r,

using (7).

Let J\mathcal J be the event that some integer in [−τ,τ][-\tau,\tau] is congruent to det⁡C\det C modulo hh.

Corollary 3.4. For three independent columns, E[D1J]≤33r−3\mathbb{E}[D1_{\mathcal J}]\le33r^{-3}.

Proof. By Lemma 3.1, J\mathcal J requires two equal labels. Exactly two labels coincide with probability at most $3/(r^3-1)\le 4r^{-3}$. By (3) the columns of CC mod rr are N(ξj)2(1,φ(ξj),−Tr⁡θ4)T\mathbb{N}(\xi_j)^2(1,\varphi(\xi_j),-\operatorname{Tr}\theta^4)^\mathsf{T}, two of them equal; the rank is at most one only if the third label has the same value of φ\varphi, which has conditional probability at most (r2−1)/(r3−2)≤1/r(r^2-1)/(r^3-2)\le1/r (the number of ξ≠ξ1\xi\ne\xi_1 with φ(ξ)=φ(ξ1)\varphi(\xi)=\varphi(\xi_1) is r2−1r^2-1 or $r^2-2). By Lemma 3.3 this case contributes at most 4r−3(2+6r⋅r−1)=32r−34r^{-3}(2+6r\cdot r^{-1})=32r^{-3}. Three equal labels have probability at most 2r−62r^{-6} and contribute at most 2r−6(2+6r)2r^{-6}(2+6r).

Put H=2hH=2h and choose a prime qq with h6<q≤2h6h^{6}<q\leq2h^{6}. Let w=⌊q/(1000H2)⌋w=\lfloor q/(1000H^{2})\rfloor. Choose a nonsquare ν∈Fq\nu\in\mathbb{F}_{q} and put

S={(x,y,x2−νy2):0≤x<w, y∈Fq},s=∣S∣=wq.S=\{(x,y,x^{2}-\nu y^{2}):0\leq x<w,\ y\in\mathbb{F}_{q}\},\qquad s=|S|=wq.

This is the slab cap of [2]. A line meets the graph of x2−νy2x^{2}-\nu y^{2} in at most two points (the restriction is a quadratic with nonzero leading coefficient x02−νy02x_{0}^{2}-\nu y_{0}^{2} for a direction with (x0,y0)≠0(x_{0},y_{0})\neq0, and vertical lines meet once), so SS has no three collinear points. Since q≥2000H2q\geq2000H^{2},

s≥q22000H2,q3s≤2000H2q=8000h2q.(8)s\geq\frac{q^{2}}{2000H^{2}},\qquad\frac{q^{3}}{s}\leq2000H^{2}q=8000h^{2}q. \tag*{(8)}

The allowed shifts A={a∈Fq3:∥ma1∥q>3Hw for 1≤m≤3H}\mathcal{A}=\{a\in\mathbb{F}_{q}^{3}:\lVert ma_{1}\rVert_{q}>3Hw\text{ for }1\leq m\leq3H\}, the random set V=Gq(a+S)\mathcal{V}=G_{q}(a+S) with aa uniform in A\mathcal{A} and GqG_{q} uniform in GL⁡3(Fq)\operatorname{GL}_{3}(\mathbb{F}_{q}), and the weight

W(A)=(q3/s)3Pr⁡(all columns of A mod q lie in V)W(A)=(q^{3}/s)^{3}\Pr(\text{all columns of }A\mathbin{\bmod}q\text{ lie in }\mathcal{V})

are as in [1 Section 5]; the same analysis for the slab is written out in [3 Section 3.4]. Lemma 5.2 of [1] is stated for S⊂{0,…,w−1}3S\subset\{0,\ldots,w-1\}^{3}, but its proof uses the box only through the first coordinate. Indeed: (a) a uniform shift violates the condition for a given mm with probability (6Hw+1)/q(6Hw+1)/q, so Pr⁡(a∉A)≤3H(6Hw+1)/q<1/2\Pr(a\notin\mathcal{A})\leq3H(6Hw+1)/q<1/2, which does not involve SS; (b) if a+v=0a+v=0 with v∈Sv\in S, then ∥a1∥q=∥v1∥q≤w−1\lVert a_{1}\rVert_{q}=\lVert v_{1}\rVert_{q}\leq w-1, contrary to m=1m=1; (c) a relation ∑ixiu(i)=0\sum_i x_i u^{(i)}=0 with u(i)=Gq(a+v(i))u^{(i)}=G_q(a+v^{(i)}), 0<∣x∣≤H0<|x|\leq H and m=∑xi≠0m=\sum x_i\neq0 gives ma1=−∑ixiv1(i)ma_1=-\sum_i x_i v_1^{(i)}, of absolute value at most 3H(w−1)3H(w-1) because 0≤v1(i)<w0\leq v_1^{(i)}<w, again a contradiction; (d) if m=0m=0 the relation contradicts the affine independence of distinct points of V\mathcal{V}, which follows from the line property. The proof of [1 Proposition 5.3] uses only the affine invariance of the line property, the transitivity of the affine group on affinely independent triples, and ∣S∣=s|S|=s. We obtain: ∣A∣≥q3/2|\mathcal{A}|\geq q^{3}/2; 0∉V0\notin\mathcal{V}; a relation ∑xiuq(i)=0\sum x_i u_q^{(i)}=0 in Fq3\mathbb{F}_{q}^{3} with 0<∣x∣≤H0<|x|\leq H is impossible for three distinct points of V\mathcal{V}; and

W(A)≪{1if the columns of A mod q are affinely independent,q3/sif rank⁡(A mod q)≥2,(q3/s)2always.(9)W(A)\ll \begin{cases} 1 & \text{if the columns of }A\mathbin{\bmod}q\text{ are affinely independent},\\ q^{3}/s & \text{if }\operatorname{rank}(A\mathbin{\bmod}q)\geq2,\\ (q^{3}/s)^{2} & \text{always}. \end{cases} \tag*{(9)}

If W(A)>0W(A)>0 then no column of A mod qA\mathbin{\bmod}q is zero, and the columns are either affinely independent or two of them are equal.

Weighted lattice counts

Fix CC with the data D,E,I,ΛD,E,I,\Lambda of Lemma 3.2, and an integer N≥hN\geq h with hq∣Nhq\mid N. Let B=([0,N)2×[N,2N))∩Z3\mathcal{B}=([0,N)^{2}\times[N,2N))\cap\mathbb{Z}^{3} and π(u)=(u1/u3,u2/u3)\pi(u)=(u_{1}/u_{3},u_{2}/u_{3}).

Proposition 5.1. For every integer tt with ∣t∣≤τ|t|\leq\tau, the sum of W(A)W(A) over integer matrices AA with columns in B\mathcal{B}, rows in Λ\Lambda, pairwise distinct projected columns and det⁡A=t\det A=t is ≪(log⁡2N)2N6/I2\ll(\log2N)^{2}N^{6}/I^{2}.

Proof. If t≠0t\neq0, then 0<∣t∣≤τ<q0<|t|\leq\tau<q, so A mod qA\mathbin{\bmod}q has rank three and W(A)≪1W(A)\ll1; every row has length <4N<4N and λ3(Λ)≤E≤h<4N\lambda_{3}(\Lambda)\leq E\leq h<4N, so [1 Proposition 2.5] with X=4NX=4N gives the bound.

Let t=0t=0. We follow the proof of [1 Proposition 7.1]. The matrix has rational rank two, and its primitive null vector xx has all coordinates nonzero and ∣x∣≪N2|x|\ll N^{2}. Put Λx=Λ∩x⊥\Lambda_x=\Lambda\cap x^{\perp}, x⋅Λ=g(x)Zx\cdot\Lambda=g(x)\mathbb{Z} and Jx=I∣x∣/g(x)J_x = I|x|/g(x). Then g(x)∣Eg(x) \mid E, so g(x)3/I≤E2/D≤h2g(x)^3/I \le E^2/D \le h^2, and Λx\Lambda_x reduces onto the plane Πx⊂Fq3\Pi_x \subset\mathbb{F}_q^3 orthogonal to xx because q∤Eq \nmid E [1 Lemma 7.2]. For a sublattice of index mm in Λx\Lambda_x, the number of rank-two row triples of length ≤4N\le4N is ≪N6/(mJx3)\ll N^6/(mJ_x^3).

Moment. For Y≥hY \ge h, ∑Y≤∣x∣<2Yg(x)3≪Y3I\sum_{Y\le|x|<2Y} g(x)^3 \ll Y^3I. Indeed g3≤∑m∣gm3g^3 \le\sum_{m\mid g}m^3 over m=∏ppjpm=\prod_p p^{j_p} with jp≤epj_p\le e_p, and by Lemma 3.2 the vectors with m∣g(x)m\mid g(x) form a union of residue classes modulo mm of proportion ∏pp−jp−max⁡(jp−bp,0)\prod_p p^{-j_p-\max(j_p-b_p,0)}; since m≤E≤h≤Ym\le E\le h\le Y each class has ≪(Y/m)3\ll(Y/m)^3 vectors of length <2Y<2Y. Hence the sum is ≪Y3∏p∑j≤epp2j−max⁡(j−bp,0)≪Y3∏ppbp+ep=Y3I\ll Y^3\prod_p\sum_{j\le e_p}p^{2j-\max(j-b_p,0)}\ll Y^3\prod_p p^{b_p+e_p}=Y^3I, each inner sum being dominated by its last term.

Split the null vectors into O(log⁡2N)O(\log2N) dyadic shells Y≤∣x∣<2YY\le|x|<2Y; for fixed xx and index mm the count is ≪N6g(x)3/(m3I3Y3)\ll N^6g(x)^3/(m^3I^3Y^3). The cases are those of [1 Proposition 7.1], with (8) in place of q3/s≪qh12q^3/s\ll qh^{12}:

  • affinely independent residues: ∣x∣>H|x|>H, so Y>H/2=hY>H/2=h; with m=1m=1, W≪1W\ll1 and the moment bound, the shell contributes ≪N6/I2\ll N^6/I^2;

  • an equal pair i,ji,j with x mod q∉Fq(ei−ej)x\bmod q\notin\mathbb{F}_q(e_i-e_j): rows lie in an index-qq sublattice, there are ≪Y3\ll Y^3 normals, and with g3≤Ih2g^3\le Ih^2 and W≪(q3/s)2W\ll(q^3/s)^2 the shell contributes ≪(N6/I2)h2q−3(q3/s)2≪(N6/I2)h6/q≤N6/I2\ll(N^6/I^2)h^2q^{-3}(q^3/s)^2\ll(N^6/I^2)h^6/q\le N^6/I^2;

  • an equal pair with x mod q∈Fq(ei−ej)x\bmod q\in\mathbb{F}_q(e_i-e_j): then Y>q/2Y>q/2 and there are ≪Y3/q2\ll Y^3/q^2 normals; rank ≥2\ge2 modulo qq gives ≪(N6/I2)h2q−2(q3/s)≪(N6/I2)h4/q\ll(N^6/I^2)h^2q^{-2}(q^3/s)\ll(N^6/I^2)h^4/q, and rank ≤1\le1 (rows in one of q+1q+1 lines, each of index qq) gives ≪(N6/I2)h2q−4(q3/s)2≪(N6/I2)h6/q2\ll(N^6/I^2)h^2q^{-4}(q^3/s)^2\ll(N^6/I^2)h^6/q^2.

Since q>h6q>h^6 all contributions are ≪N6/I2\ll N^6/I^2 per shell.

Sampling

Let s0=479s_0=479 and

N=(hq)4Bs0=r4k−s0B24(k−1)−s0q4.(10)N=\frac{(hq)^4}{B^{s_0}}=r^{4k-s_0}B_2^{4(k-1)-s_0}q^4. \tag*{(10)}

This is an integer divisible by hqhq, and N≥hN\ge h. Choose GhG_h uniformly in SL3(Z/hZ)\mathrm{SL}_3(\mathbb{Z}/h\mathbb{Z}) and V\mathcal{V} as in § 4, independently. Given these shared choices, each sample draws a fresh column cc as in § 3, a fresh uniform element of V\mathcal{V}, and a uniform u∈Bu\in\mathcal{B} with u≡Ghc(modh)u\equiv G_hc\pmod h and u mod qu\bmod q equal to that element. Each prescribed residue pair has exactly (N/(hq))3(N/(hq))^3 lifts. The exact lifting identity [1 Lemma 6.2] holds verbatim: conditional on C\mathcal{C} and the labels,

Pr⁡(A∈E∣C)=h9N9∣OC∣∑A∈E, Amodh∈OCW(A).\Pr(A\in\mathcal{E}\mid\mathcal{C})=\frac{h^9}{N^9|\mathcal{O}_{\mathcal{C}}|}\sum_{\substack{A\in\mathcal{E},\ A\bmod h\in\mathcal{O}_{\mathcal{C}}}}W(A).

A triple is bad if its projections are pairwise distinct and ∣det⁡A∣≤τ|\det A|\le\tau. Since 2τ<h2\tau<h, at most one determinant value in [−τ,τ][-\tau,\tau] is possible, and none unless J\mathcal{J} occurs. By Lemma 3.2, Proposition 5.1 and Corollary 3.4,

Pr⁡(bad)≪(log⁡2N)2hN3E[D1J]≪(log⁡2N)2hN3r3.(11)\Pr(\mathrm{bad})\ll(\log2N)^2\frac{h}{N^3}\mathbb{E}[D1_{\mathcal{J}}]\ll(\log2N)^2\frac{h}{N^3r^3}. \tag*{(11)}

For two samples, Pr⁡(π(u)=π(v))≪(hq)6N−3\Pr(\pi(u)=\pi(v))\ll(hq)^6N^{-3} [1 Lemma 6.1].

Deletion

Fix γ=354042/354043<1\gamma= 354042/354043 < 1, put ar=rγN3/τa_r = r^\gamma\sqrt{N^3/\tau}, nr=⌊ar⌋n_r = \lfloor a_r \rfloor, and take 2nr2n_r samples. Let ZZ count the pairs with equal projections and the bad triples. Then

EZnr≪nr(hq)6N3+nr2(log⁡2N)2hN3r3.\frac{\mathbb{E}Z}{n_r} \ll n_r\frac{(hq)^6}{N^3}+n_r^2(\log2N)^2\frac{h}{N^3r^3}.

For the first term, N3/2=(hq)6B−3s0/2N^{3/2}=(hq)^6B^{-3s_0/2} and τ≥Bk−1/3\tau\geq B^{k-1}/3, so

nr(hq)6N3≤rγB3s0/2τ≤3rγB(3s0−(k−1))/2=3rγB−1→0,n_r\frac{(hq)^6}{N^3}\leq\frac{r^\gamma B^{3s_0/2}}{\sqrt{\tau}}\leq\sqrt{3}r^\gamma B^{(3s_0-(k-1))/2}=\sqrt{3}r^\gamma B^{-1}\to0,

because 3s0−(k−1)=1437−1439=−23s_0-(k-1)=1437-1439=-2 and B≫r6B\gg r^6. For the second term, nr2≤r2γN3/τn_r^2\leq r^{2\gamma}N^3/\tau and h/τ≤3rh/\tau\leq3r, so it is ≪(log⁡2N)2r2γ−2→0\ll(\log2N)^2r^{2\gamma-2}\to0, since log⁡2N≪log⁡r\log2N\ll\log r and γ<1\gamma<1. Hence EZ<nr\mathbb{E}Z<n_r for all large rr. Deleting one index from each counted pair or triple leaves at least nrn_r samples whose projections are distinct and whose triples satisfy ∣det⁡A∣>τ|\det A|>\tau. Every coordinate u3u_3 lies in [N,2N)[N,2N), so the projective area identity gives

Δ(Pr)≥τ16N3,nr2Δ(Pr)≥ar24⋅τ16N3=r2γ64.\Delta(P_r)\geq\frac{\tau}{16N^3},\qquad n_r^2\Delta(P_r)\geq\frac{a_r^2}{4}\cdot\frac{\tau}{16N^3}=\frac{r^{2\gamma}}{64}.

for a set PrP_r of nrn_r points.

ar=rγ(hq)6B3s0/2τ≪rγh42B−3s0/2−(k−1)/2≍rγ+42B832(k−1)−32s0≍rα,a_r=r^\gamma\frac{(hq)^6}{B^{3s_0/2}\sqrt{\tau}}\ll r^\gamma h^{42}B^{-3s_0/2-(k-1)/2}\asymp r^{\gamma+42}B^{\frac{83}{2}(k-1)-\frac{3}{2}s_0}\asymp r^\alpha,
α=γ+42+249(k−1)−9s0=γ+42+249⋅1439−4311=γ+354042.\alpha=\gamma+42+249(k-1)-9s_0=\gamma+42+249\cdot1439-4311=\gamma+354042.

So a0rα≤nr≤b0rαa_0r^\alpha\leq n_r\leq b_0r^\alpha for constants a0,b0>0a_0,b_0>0 and all large primes rr, and nr2Δ(Pr)≥r2γ/64≥cnr2γ/αn_r^2\Delta(P_r)\geq r^{2\gamma}/64\geq c n_r^{2\gamma/\alpha}. With γ=354042/354043\gamma=354042/354043,

2γα=2⋅354042/354043354042⋅354044/354043=2354044=1177022=η.\frac{2\gamma}{\alpha}=\frac{2\cdot354042/354043}{354042\cdot354044/354043}=\frac{2}{354044}=\frac{1}{177022}=\eta.

Every cardinality

Given a large nn, let y=(n/a0)1/αy=(n/a_0)^{1/\alpha} and choose a prime r∈(y,2y]r\in(y,2y]. Then n≤nr≤C0nn\leq n_r\leq C_0n with C0=2αb0/a0C_0=2^\alpha b_0/a_0. Keeping nn points of PrP_r does not decrease the minimum area, so Δ(n)≥Δ(Pr)≥cnr−2+η≥cC0−2+ηn−2+η\Delta(n)\geq\Delta(P_r)\geq c n_r^{-2+\eta}\geq cC_0^{-2+\eta}n^{-2+\eta}. This proves Theorem 1.1. □

Remarks

Where the gain comes from. In [1, 2, 3] the modulus is h=Bkh=B^k and the obstruction excludes [−τ,τ][-\tau,\tau] with h/τ≍Bh/\tau\asymp B; the collision probability must beat Br2γBr^{2\gamma}, which forces d=5d=5 even with the fresh-digit refinement. With B≡0(modr)B\equiv0\pmod r the information “γk−1≢0(modr)\gamma^{k-1}\not\equiv0\pmod r” already excludes the window for the smaller modulus rBk−1rB^{k-1}, so only r2γr^{2\gamma} must be beaten. The digit lengths, the cap and the lift box are unchanged from [2, 3].

The value of γ\gamma. Any γ<1\gamma< 1 works in the deletion step; the choice γ=354042/354043\gamma= 354042/354043 gives the clean value 1/1770221/177022, and the exponents obtained approach 2/3540432/354043. With γ\gamma this close to 1 the second term in the deletion step is small only once (log⁡r)2γ−2/354043(\log r)^{2\gamma-2/354043} is, so n0n_0 is astronomically large; this does not affect the theorem.

Checks. The ancillary files contain: the design check (check_design.py); the exact identity (4) and the column (3) for random labels with d=3d = 3, r=23r = 23 (check_encoding.py); an end-to-end test that builds the actual integer digit columns with the parameters (3.1)–(3.2) for r=23r = 23 and verifies Lemma 3.1 (check_obstruction.py); and the exponent arithmetic (exponent.py).
