Representations and nn-universality of hermitian lattices over local and number fields

Abstract

Let E/FE/F be a quadratic field extension. For any positive integer nn an integral hermitian form over E/FE/F is called nn-universal if it represents all integral hermitian forms of rank nn over E/FE/F. We study nn-universal hermitian forms when FF is a local field of characteristic ≠2\neq 2 or a number field. In the local case, we characterize nn-universal integral hermitian forms and provide finite criterion sets for nn-universality. In the number field case, we show that an indefinite integral hermitian form is nn-universal if and only if it is nn-universal everywhere locally.
