Abstract

We prove a local TbTb theorem with testing conditions on metric balls, for possibly non-doubling measures of polynomial growth on geometrically doubling metric spaces. It resolves the maximal-truncation version of Hofmann's local TbTb problem for all 1<p,q≤∞1<p,q\leq\infty, without assuming antisymmetry of the Calderón-Zygmund kernel. Our theorem allows accretive systems of complex testing measures satisfying a quantitative small-set condition; these measures need not be absolutely continuous with respect to the underlying measure. Testing requires only a one-level L0L^0 bound for maximal truncations, with an alternative for balls on which the underlying measure concentrates in a set of small relative diameter. We also remove antisymmetry from the known buffered and unbuffered fixed-truncation criteria. The proof combines a mixed corona decomposition adapted to the two testing systems with two-measure L2L^2 estimates for suppressed operators. As an application in the parabolic space Pn\mathbb P^n, local time-directed A∞A_\infty-type conditions on caloric and adjoint caloric measure imply L2(σ)L^2(σ)-boundedness of the spatial gradient of the heat single layer potential for boundary measures σσ with upper parabolic (n+1)(n+1)-growth. This gives a parabolic counterpart of the harmonic-measure theorem of Mourgoglou and Tolsa without Ahlfors regularity, corkscrew or Harnack chain assumptions.

Introduction

A central line of research in harmonic analysis aims to determine sufficient conditions for the boundedness of singular integral operators (SIOs) in terms of their action on suitable testing functions, and has given rise to so-called T1T1- and TbTb-type theorems. In this paper, we work in the framework of local TbTb theorems, in which the L2L^2-boundedness of a SIO is deduced from testing conditions on functions bBb_B, and bB∗b_B^* for the adjoint operator, adapted to a suitable family of balls BB in the ambient space. Motivated by applications to PDEs, Steve Hofmann posed in 2008, during his plenary short course at the 8th International Conference on Harmonic Analysis and Partial Differential Equations held in El Escorial (Madrid, Spain), the problem of whether suitable LpL^p-integrability conditions on the testing functions yield L2L^2-boundedness of a singular integral operator; see [31 Section 3.3.1] or the survey by S. Hofmann and A. McIntosh [36 Section 5.1.2]. It turned out to be a delicate question, even in the case of SIOs associated with the Lebesgue measure on Euclidean spaces, and several advances have appeared in the recent literature in non-homogeneous harmonic analysis, as we discuss later in this introduction (see § 1.1).

Our main result, Theorem 1.3, is a local TbTb theorem with testing conditions on metric balls, for possibly non-doubling measures of polynomial growth on geometrically doubling metric spaces. It applies to general Calderón-Zygmund kernels, with two unrelated accretive systems of finite complex testing measures for the operator and for its adjoint.

The testing assumptions are formulated on suitable families of doubling balls with small boundary, and they do not refer to any dyadic lattice. Passing from these assumptions to a dyadic testing system is delicate, since the accretivity on a ball need not persist on its dyadic subcells, and the testing balls associated with nested cells need not be nested. Our proof merges this geometry of balls with two independent random dyadic systems and a fixed David-Mattila lattice, by means of a mixed corona decomposition and two-measure estimates for suppressed operators.

The testing measures satisfy a quantitative small-set condition, and they need not be absolutely continuous with respect to the underlying measure. In the operator-testing alternative, only a one-level L0L^0 bound for the maximal truncations is required on a contracted testing ball, outside a set of small relative measure. We also allow an alternative for the balls on which a fixed proportion of the underlying measure is concentrated on a set of small relative diameter. We remark that allowing this dichotomy is not only a technical improvement but crucial to obtain the parabolic version of [MT20] in full generality1.

For testing functions with LpL^p and LqL^q size bounds, the theorem resolves the maximal-truncation version of Hofmann’s local TbTb problem in the full range 1<p,q≤∞1 < p, q \leq\infty, see Corollary 1.4. Combined with the Cotlar-type argument of [60], it also gives buffered and unbuffered criteria for fixed truncations, in the corresponding ranges of exponents, for kernels that are not necessarily antisymmetric and with testing conditions on metric balls, see Corollary 1.5.

Following the terminology in [41], we say that a metric space (X,d)(X,d) is geometrically doubling if there exists D∈ND \in\mathbb{N} such that, for every x∈Xx \in X and r>0r > 0, the open ball B(x,r):={y∈X:d(x,y)<r}B(x,r) := \{y \in X : d(x,y) < r\} can be covered by at most DD balls B(xj,r/2)B(x_j,r/2), with xj∈Xx_j \in X. If B⊂XB \subset X is a ball, we also use the notation r(B)r(B) for its radius and, if B=B(x,r)B = B(x,r) and λ>0\lambda> 0, the notation λB:=B(x,λr)\lambda B := B(x,\lambda r).

Definition 1.1. We say that K:(X×X)∖{(x,x):x∈X}→CK : (X \times X) \setminus\{(x,x) : x \in X\} \to\mathbb{C} is an nn-dimensional Calderón-Zygmund kernel if there exist C>0C > 0 and γ∈(0,1]\gamma\in(0,1] such that:

(1) For all x,y∈Xx,y \in X with x≠yx \ne y we have

∣K(x,y)∣≤Cd(x,y)n|K(x,y)| \leq\frac{C}{d(x,y)^n}

(2) For all x,x′,y∈Xx,x',y \in X with d(x,y)≥2d(x,x′)d(x,y) \geq2d(x,x') we have

∣K(x,y)−K(x′,y)∣+∣K(y,x)−K(y,x′)∣≤Cd(x,x′)γd(x,y)n+γ.|K(x,y)-K(x',y)| + |K(y,x)-K(y,x')| \leq C\frac{d(x,x')^\gamma}{d(x,y)^{n+\gamma}}.

Given a Calderón-Zygmund kernel KK, a non-negative Radon measure μ\mu on XX, and ε>0\varepsilon> 0 we define its associated singular integral operator (SIO) as

Tμf(x):=∫K(x,y)f(y) dμ(y)for f∈L1(μ) and x∉supp⁡(fμ)T_\mu f(x) := \int K(x,y)f(y)\,d\mu(y) \qquad\text{for } f \in L^1(\mu) \text{ and } x \notin\operatorname{supp}(f\mu)

and its associated ε\varepsilon-truncations

Tμ,εf(x)=∫d(x,y)>εK(x,y)f(y) dμ(y).T_{\mu,\varepsilon}f(x)=\int_{d(x,y)>\varepsilon}K(x,y)f(y)\,d\mu(y).

These integrals are absolutely convergent for f∈L1(μ)f\in L^1(\mu) and, if μ\mu has polynomial growth as in (1) below, also for f∈Lp(μ)f\in L^p(\mu), 1<p<∞1<p<\infty. We say that TμT_\mu is bounded on Lp(μ)L^p(\mu) for 1≤p<∞1\leq p<\infty (resp. from L1(μ)L^1(\mu) to L1,∞(μ)L^{1,\infty}(\mu)) if Tμ,εT_{\mu,\varepsilon} is bounded on Lp(μ)L^p(\mu) (resp. from L1(μ)L^1(\mu) to L1,∞(μ)L^{1,\infty}(\mu)) uniformly in ε>0\varepsilon>0. In this case, we write

∥Tμ∥Lp(μ)→Lp(μ):=sup⁡ε>0∥Tμ,ε∥Lp(μ)→Lp(μ).\lVert T_\mu\rVert_{L^p(\mu)\to L^p(\mu)}:=\sup_{\varepsilon>0}\lVert T_{\mu,\varepsilon}\rVert_{L^p(\mu)\to L^p(\mu)}.

We also define the maximal singular integral as

Tμ,♯f(x)=sup⁡ε>0∣Tμ,εf(x)∣.T_{\mu,\sharp}f(x)=\sup_{\varepsilon>0}\lvert T_{\mu,\varepsilon}f(x)\rvert.

We further understand that Tεμ(x):=Tμ,ε1(x)T_\varepsilon\mu(x):=T_{\mu,\varepsilon}1(x) if μ\mu is finite. This definition also generalizes to complex measures, and we define T♯μ(x)T_\sharp\mu(x) analogously. Finally, given a singular integral operator TT associated with a Calderón–Zygmund kernel K(x,y)K(x,y), we denote by T∗T^* its adjoint, which corresponds to the SIO associated with the kernel K(y,x)K(y,x).

For n>0n>0, we say that a Radon measure μ∈M+(X)\mu\in\mathcal{M}_+(X) has growth of degree nn, or, for brevity, nn-growth with constant C0>0C_0>0, if

μ(B(x,r))≤C0rn,for all x∈X and all r>0.(1)\mu(B(x,r))\leq C_0r^n,\qquad\text{for all }x\in X\text{ and all }r>0. \tag*{(1)}

Before stating the precise testing assumptions, we briefly explain their form. We allow finite complex measures in place of testing functions, with a total variation bound and a small-set condition requiring that sets of small relative μ\mu-measure carry only a small fraction of the total variation, in the spirit of [62 Theorem 1.6]. On each testing ball, we allow two alternatives: either the maximal truncations are bounded on a contracted ball outside a set of small relative μ\mu-measure, or a fixed proportion of the underlying measure is concentrated on a set of small relative diameter. The second alternative allows us to handle balls where the measure concentrates near the poles in our application to caloric measure.

Definition 1.2 (Accretive measure testing system). Let B\mathcal{B} be a family of balls, and fix C1≥1\mathcal{C}_1\geq1, ε0∈(0,1)\varepsilon_0\in(0,1), and τ,ζ∈(0,1)\tau,\zeta\in(0,1). An accretive measure testing system for TT consists of finite complex Radon measures {ν^B}B∈B\{\widehat{\nu}_B\}_{B\in\mathcal{B}} such that

∣ν^B∣(X∖B)=0,ν^B(B)=μ(B),∥ν^B∥≤C1μ(B).(2)\lvert\widehat{\nu}_B\rvert(X\setminus B)=0,\qquad\widehat{\nu}_B(B)=\mu(B),\qquad\lVert\widehat{\nu}_B\rVert\leq\mathcal{C}_1\mu(B). \tag*{(2)}

For every Borel set A⊂BA\subset B, the following condition holds:

If μ(A)≤ε0μ(B),then∣ν^B∣(A)≤∥ν^B∥200C1.(3)\text{If }\mu(A)\leq\varepsilon_0\mu(B),\qquad\text{then}\qquad\lvert\widehat{\nu}_B\rvert(A)\leq\frac{\lVert\widehat{\nu}_B\rVert}{200\mathcal{C}_1}. \tag*{(3)}

Moreover, for every η∈(0,1/10)\eta\in(0,1/10) there is a finite constant C2(η)>0\mathcal{C}_2(\eta)>0 such that, for each B∈BB\in\mathcal{B}, there is a Borel set UB=UB(η)⊂BU_B=U_B(\eta)\subset B satisfying one of the following alternatives:

(i) There is a Borel set VB⊂UBV_B\subset U_B such that

diam⁡(VB)≤ηr(B)andμ(VB)≥ζ2μ(B).(4)\operatorname{diam}(V_B)\leq\eta r(B)\qquad\text{and}\qquad\mu(V_B)\geq\frac{\zeta}{2}\mu(B). \tag*{(4)}

(ii) We have

μ(UB)<ζμ(B),T♯ν^B(x)≤C2(η)for every x∈(1−τ)B∖UB.(5)\mu(U_B)<\zeta\mu(B),\qquad T_\sharp\widehat{\nu}_B(x)\leq\mathcal{C}_2(\eta)\quad\text{for every }x\in(1-\tau)B\setminus U_B. \tag*{(5)}

An accretive measure testing system for T∗T^* is defined in the same way, with T∗T^* in place of TT, and we always assume that the systems for TT and T∗T^* have the same constants C1\mathcal{C}_1, ε0\varepsilon_0, τ\tau, ζ\zeta, and C2(η)\mathcal{C}_2(\eta).

Alternative (5) is equivalent to the one-level L0L^0 condition

μ({x∈(1−τ)B:T♯ν^B(x)>C2(η)})<ζμ(B),(6)\mu\left(\left\{x\in(1-\tau)B:T^\sharp\widehat{\nu}_B(x)>\mathcal{C}_2(\eta)\right\}\right)<\zeta\mu(B), \tag*{(6)}
