Regularity Effects on the Small-Diffusion Asymptotics of the Principal Eigenvalue: Non-convergence and Convergence
Abstract
We study the asymptotic behavior as of the principal eigenvalue of the one-dimensional elliptic problem where is fixed, , and . We assume that only at , where attains a strict minimum. Within this class, we construct a counterexample for which has two distinct subsequential limits as , leading to the non-convergence of . We then consider another class of advection functions for which has positive one-sided limits at . For this class, we prove that converges as . Thus, regularity alone does not ensure convergence of the principal eigenvalue, even when has exactly one strict interior critical minimal point.
