An elementary proof of a tight bound for the additive chromatic number
Abstract
An additive coloring assigns positive integer labels to the vertices of a graph so that adjacent vertices have different sums of their neighbors' labels. The additive chromatic number is the least for which labels from suffice. We give an elementary orientation argument proving that every finite simple graph satisfies . This argument yields a -additive-coloring in polynomial time and improves upon the current best bound of , valid for , from Akbari, Ghanbari, Manaviyat, and Zare.
Introduction
All graphs in this paper are simple and finite. Let be a graph and a vertex coloring of . For a vertex , write
If for every edge , then is an additive coloring of . The additive chromatic number of , denoted by , is the least positive integer for which admits an additive coloring with labels in .
Additive colorings were introduced by Czerwiński, Grytczuk, and Żelazny [3] using the terms lucky labeling and lucky number for additive coloring and additive chromatic number, respectively.
For general graphs, the best known upper bound on in terms of the maximum degree has been quadratic. Akbari, Ghanbari, Manaviyat, and Zare [1] studied the list version of the problem: the lucky choice number is the least such that, whenever each vertex is given a set of positive integers, there is an additive coloring with for every . They proved that for . Since , this gives
Severín [5] describes this as the best known upper bound on in terms of , and we are not aware of any later improvement that holds for all graphs.
Gossett [4] proved an additive analogue of the Alon–Tarsi theorem [2]: if some orientation of satisfies an Alon–Tarsi-type condition, then lists whose sizes exceed the outdegrees by one suffice. He conjectured that every graph has such an orientation; this conjecture would imply for every graph .
We improve (1) to , which is tight since . In fact, we prove a stronger statement: for any choice of positive integers , there is an additive coloring with for every vertex . Moreover, this coloring is obtainable in polynomial time.
Proof of the upper bound
The proofs of the previous upper bounds rely on algebraic tools such as the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz and Alon–Tarsi-type orientation criteria [1, 3, 4]. Our proof is elementary and constructive.
Theorem 2.1. Let be a graph, and assign a positive integer to every vertex. There is an additive coloring satisfying
In particular, .
Proof. For an orientation of , put
Choose minimizing among the finitely many orientations. If is an arc in and is the orientation with this one arc reversed, then we compute
For , using similar computation to above, if ,
and if ,
Combining (2), (3), and (4) and writing gives
By minimality of , on every arc . □
This translates to a -additive-coloring in polynomial time:
Corollary 2.2. After setting for all as in theorem 2.1, start from any orientation and repeatedly reverse arcs whose endpoints have equal neighborhood sums. This process terminates at an additive coloring after at most
reversals.
Proof. Each reversal decreases by exactly 1 by (5). Through the process, we maintain . Hence
