An alternative variational approach to constrained critical points for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with combined nonlinearities
Abstract
We introduce a new variational framework for the study of standing waves for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with combined power nonlinearities. The approach is based on minimizing the mass functional over a set defined by an upper bound on the energy and a lower bound on a nonlinear potential term, rather than minimizing the energy at prescribed mass. This yields a new characterization of the sharp Gagliardo–Nirenberg optimizer through purely variational constraints. As a consequence, we establish the existence of minimizers for all energy levels below a critical threshold and derive the corresponding Euler–Lagrange equations. These minimizers give rise to standing-wave solutions of the nonlinear Schröedinger equation
In this paper we are motivated by the following Schrödinger type equation
where , , is a complex wave function and the exponents are of mass subcritical type, meaning that . Given an initial datum , the Cauchy problem is (globally) well-posed and satisfies conservation of mass and energy, defined respectively by
and
Particular solutions to (0.1) are the so-called standing wave solutions, which are solutions to (0.1) of the form
with , and is a time-independent function belonging to which satisfies
As the mass is a physical quantity which is preserved along the flow of (0.1), in order to find solutions to (0.4), a natural way to study the problem is to look for critical points of the energy functional
constrained on the -spheres in described by
So, by a solution of (0.4) we mean a pair where appears as the Lagrange multiplier associated to the critical point on . For a fixed mass , we define the ground state energy the quantity , defined as
If a minimizer to (0.5) exists, we call it ground state solution. Concerning the existence of ground states everything is well understood in arbitrary dimension thanks to the following result:
Theorem 0.1. [1, 7] Let and , then there exists a strictly positive mass such that:
(i) for all ;
(ii) for all .
Moreover there are no constrained minimizers for , and for all there exists such that .
In order to state our main results it is convenient to introduce the notation
such that
and any standing wave solution solves
The case corresponds to states that are time independent, i.e. static. Such kind of solution exists and it corresponds to the unique positive radially symmetric static solution that solves
whose asymptotic decay at infinity is explicitly given by a power-like tail that decays as , see [4]. The assumed range of exponents ensures that .
The classical Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality with sharp constant
where is defined by the relation
can be written in terms of , , as
where
and
Note that the following (crucial) identity holds
Now we introduce two relevant quantitites that are relevant for our first result. We define
such that
Our first result characterizes the energy level of the unique positive static solution that solves (0.7).
Theorem 0.2. Let and let us assume that fulfills
then is a critical point of at the level and it attains the sharp constant in GN inequality, i.e.
Moreover, up to translations and multiplication by a constant phase, coincides with the unique positive radial solution .
Our second result introduces an alternative variational construction of critical points of the energy functional with a mass constraint. Here, instead to minimize the non convex functional on the sphere , we choose to minimize the convex functional on a non convex constraint set given by the conditions , , . Of course, for with and , minimizing on the set is the same as minimizing on the set , both facts meaning
As will become clear later, the characterization of the set , given by Theorem 0.2 will be crucial in the proof of the following theorem.
Theorem 0.3. Let and . For every , there exists that is a global minimizer of on the set
that satisfies
Remark 0.1. The restriction to the radial space in Theorem 0.3 is used only to recover compactness. By restricting the minimization problem to , we can use the compact embedding
This yields the strong convergence of a minimizing sequence in and , which is needed to pass to the limit in the nonlinear functionals and . This compactness is crucial to ensure that the weak limit of a minimizing sequence remains in the constraint set.
Remark 0.2. The variational characterization established in Theorem 0.3 appears to be particularly relevant in the context of nonlinear Schrödinger equations with competing nonlinearities. Indeed, the global minimizers for the mass on the set constructed in Theorem 0.3 correspond to standing waves
for NLS equation
Indeed Theorem 0.3 shows that standing waves with mass strictly smaller than the threshold mass given by Theorem 0.1 exist. This fact is interesting is we connect our result with the paper by Fukaya and Hayashi, see [5], where they proved that the standing waves associated with the above equation can be dynamically unstable (under certain condition on and ), and where they provide that the limiting profile of branches of positive-frequency ground states is the static solution . Their analysis relies on a detailed variational description of the zero-frequency elliptic problem. Our results provide an alternative characterization of the same limiting profile through the threshold pair , showing that the static solution is the unique function satisfying the simultaneous constraints and . This offers a new geometric interpretation of the distinguished role played by the algebraic ground state in the dynamics of the equation.
Remark 0.3. Let be the ground state provided by Theorem 0.1, so that
We claim that
Indeed, if , we can choose such that
Since , we have , and therefore
Because and , both coefficients are negative, hence
Since , Theorem 0.2 would imply that and therefore
a contradiction. Thus . The equality is also impossible. Indeed, since , Theorem 0.2 would again imply , yielding
which is absurd. Consequently,
It follows that for every . Hence for , the mass of the minimizer fulfills
Since every minimizer of satisfies , the function cannot realize the minimum. Therefore,
for every , showing that the standing waves provided by Theorem 0.3 have mass strictly smaller than the threshold mass of Theorem 0.1.
Remark 0.4. Since the seminal work by Tao, Vișan, and Zhang [11], the NLS with combined nonlinearities has attracted a lot of attention. Concerning the existence of standing waves when the leading nonlinearity is mass super-critical it is worth mentioning at least the following recent works [2, 9, 10], and references therein.
Remark 0.5. A further motivation for the present work comes from recent scattering results for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with combined mass-subcritical nonlinearities. In the recent paper [1] Bellazzini, Forcella and Georgiev proved a scattering result for datum belonging to , i.e. the subspace of with finite variance. More precisely the authors proved that solutions scatter whenever the initial mass is sufficiently small, without requiring a smallness assumption on the whole -norm. The sharp size of this threshold mass for scattering remains an open problem. If and taken and calling the minimizer for the mass given by Theorem 0.3 we proved that exist non scattering states with mass strictly smaller then the threshold mass given by Theorem 0.1.
Proof of Theorem 0.2
We recall an elementary inequality.
Lemma 1.1. For
with equality iff .
Proof. Calling , , , , we have , . The concave function attains the maximum in at such that . Hence we have
which implies
with equality iff .
Now let us consider fulfilling
Then, by GN inequality (0.8) and Lemma 1.1, hiding the dependence on , we obtain
where we have used in the last line the relation .
Hence we obtain
thanks to the relation (0.10) and (0.12). Therefore the above are in fact equalities and in particular
and thus . Calling we get such that
that implies, thanks to (0.12), . Finally, thanks to the fact that , attains the sharp constant in Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequality and minimizes the ratio . Thus
Now to conclude that (modulo space and phase shift) it sufficies to notice that
any solution to the equation shall fulfill the relations
that are equivalent to
the GN inequality implies
and hence an a priori bound of energy of non trivial critical point of is given by .
the optimizers for GN can be obtained also by minimizing (a la Berestycki-Lions [3]) on the constraint and then rescaling to remove the Lagrange multiplier.
any minimizer for on the constraint is radially symmetric (Lopes [8]) and it is positive (Berestycki-Lions [3]) hence it is unique (Kwong-Zhang [6]).
Proof of Theorem 0.3
Notice that for every . Indeed, for any ,
as , while . Therefore for large enough. Now let us consider a minimizing sequence for on and denote , , , , thus
By the fact that we have and hence by GN inequality
The mass subcritical condition guarantees hence that is bounded as well as and that in . Denoting , , , we have, by the compact embedding of radial function,
Thus and , so and the infimum is achieved. We have also that thanks to Theorem 0.2 because . Moreover if we assume , is forced to be a free critical point of which is the trivial function, therefore . Moreover by Theorem 0.2 and by Lagrange multiplier principle we have for some
Now, in order to prove that , we argue by contradiction assuming that . For certainly because , and since for close to one has for all close to . Thus , whence from we have .
