The trace distribution of rr-primitive kk-normal elements of finite fields

Abstract

Let q=peq=p^e be a prime power and n≥1n\geq1. Let L=\F_{q^n} and K=\F_q. We study the trace distribution of rr-primitive kk-normal elements of LL over KK. We first derive exact formulas for the number of kk-normal elements of LL with a prescribed trace in KK. For r∣qn−1r\mid q^n-1, 0≤k≤n−10\leq k\le n-1, and a∈Ka\in K, let Nr,k(a)\mathcal{N}_{r,k}(a) denote the number of rr-primitive kk-normal elements of LL with trace aa. We establish a sufficient condition for Nr,k\mathcal{N}_{r,k} to be constant on K×K^\times. We also identify a subgroup HrH_r of K×K^\times and prove that Nr,k\mathcal{N}_{r,k} is constant on each coset of HrH_r. Finally, we obtain a necessary and sufficient character-sum condition for Nr,k\mathcal{N}_{r,k} to be constant on K×K^\times.
