Abstract

An additive coloring assigns positive integer labels to the vertices of a graph so that adjacent vertices have different sums of their neighbors' labels. The additive chromatic number η(G)η(G) is the least kk for which labels from [k][k] suffice. We give an elementary orientation argument proving that every finite simple graph GG satisfies η(G)≤Δ(G)+1η(G) \leq Δ(G) + 1. This argument yields a (Δ(G)+1)(Δ(G) + 1)-additive-coloring in polynomial time and improves upon the current best bound of η(G)≤Δ(G)2−Δ(G)+1η(G) \leq Δ(G)^{2} - Δ(G) + 1, valid for Δ(G)≥2Δ(G) \geq 2, from Akbari, Ghanbari, Manaviyat, and Zare.

Introduction

All graphs in this paper are simple and finite. Let GG be a graph and f:V(G)→N∗f : V(G) \to\mathbb{N}^{*} a vertex coloring of GG. For a vertex v∈V(G)v \in V(G), write

Sf(v)=∑w∈NG(v)f(w).S_f(v) = \sum_{w \in N_G(v)} f(w).

If Sf(u)≠Sf(v)S_f(u) \ne S_f(v) for every edge {u,v}∈E(G)\{u,v\} \in E(G), then ff is an additive coloring of GG. The additive chromatic number of GG, denoted by η(G)\eta(G), is the least positive integer kk for which GG admits an additive coloring with labels in [k][k].

Additive colorings were introduced by Czerwiński, Grytczuk, and Żelazny [3] using the terms lucky labeling and lucky number for additive coloring and additive chromatic number, respectively.

For general graphs, the best known upper bound on η(G)\eta(G) in terms of the maximum degree has been quadratic. Akbari, Ghanbari, Manaviyat, and Zare [1] studied the list version of the problem: the lucky choice number ηℓ(G)\eta_{\ell}(G) is the least kk such that, whenever each vertex vv is given a set L(v)L(v) of kk positive integers, there is an additive coloring ff with f(v)∈L(v)f(v) \in L(v) for every vv. They proved that ηℓ(G)≤Δ(G)2−Δ(G)+1\eta_{\ell}(G) \le\Delta(G)^2 - \Delta(G) + 1 for Δ(G)≥2\Delta(G) \ge2. Since η(G)≤ηℓ(G)\eta(G) \le\eta_{\ell}(G), this gives

η(G)≤Δ(G)2−Δ(G)+1,Δ(G)≥2.(1)\eta(G) \le\Delta(G)^2 - \Delta(G) + 1,\qquad\Delta(G) \ge2. \tag*{(1)}

Severín [5] describes this as the best known upper bound on η(G)\eta(G) in terms of Δ(G)\Delta(G), and we are not aware of any later improvement that holds for all graphs.

Gossett [4] proved an additive analogue of the Alon–Tarsi theorem [2]: if some orientation of GG satisfies an Alon–Tarsi-type condition, then lists whose sizes exceed the outdegrees by one suffice. He conjectured that every graph has such an orientation; this conjecture would imply ηℓ(G)≤Δ(G)+1\eta_{\ell}(G) \le\Delta(G) + 1 for every graph GG.

We improve (1) to η(G)≤Δ(G)+1\eta(G) \le\Delta(G) + 1, which is tight since η(KΔ+1)=Δ+1\eta(K_{\Delta+1}) = \Delta+ 1. In fact, we prove a stronger statement: for any choice of positive integers {av}v∈V(G)\{a_v\}_{v \in V(G)}, there is an additive coloring ff with f(v)∈{av,av+1,…,av+d(v)}f(v) \in\{a_v, a_v + 1, \ldots, a_v + d(v)\} for every vertex vv. Moreover, this coloring is obtainable in polynomial time.

Proof of the upper bound

The proofs of the previous upper bounds rely on algebraic tools such as the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz and Alon–Tarsi-type orientation criteria [1, 3, 4]. Our proof is elementary and constructive.

Theorem 2.1. Let GG be a graph, and assign a positive integer ava_v to every vertex. There is an additive coloring satisfying

f(v)∈{av,av+1,…,av+d(v)},v∈V(G).f(v) \in\{a_v, a_v + 1, \ldots, a_v + d(v)\}, \qquad v \in V(G).

In particular, η(G)≤Δ(G)+1\eta(G) \le\Delta(G) + 1.

Proof. For an orientation DD of GG, put

fD(v)=av+dD+(v),Φ(D)=∑{x,y}∈E(G)fD(x)fD(y).f_D(v) = a_v + d_D^+(v), \qquad\Phi(D) = \sum_{\{x,y\}\in E(G)} f_D(x)f_D(y).

Choose DD minimizing Φ\Phi among the finitely many orientations. If (u,v)(u,v) is an arc in DD and D′D' is the orientation with this one arc reversed, then we compute

fD′(u)fD′(v)−fD(u)fD(v)=(au+dD+(u)−1)(av+dD+(v)+1)−(au+dD+(u))(av+dD+(v))=fD(u)−fD(v)−1.(2)\begin{aligned} f_{D'}(u)f_{D'}(v) - f_D(u)f_D(v) &= (a_u+d_D^+(u)-1)(a_v+d_D^+(v)+1) \\ &\quad- (a_u+d_D^+(u))(a_v+d_D^+(v)) \\ &= f_D(u)-f_D(v)-1. \tag*{(2)} \end{aligned}

For w≠u,vw\ne u,v, using similar computation to above, if {u,w}∈E(G)\{u,w\}\in E(G),

fD′(u)fD′(w)−fD(u)fD(w)=−fD(w).(3)f_{D'}(u)f_{D'}(w)-f_D(u)f_D(w)=-f_D(w). \tag*{(3)}

and if {w,v}∈E(G)\{w,v\}\in E(G),

fD′(w)fD′(v)−fD(w)fD(v)=fD(w).(4)f_{D'}(w)f_{D'}(v)-f_D(w)f_D(v)=f_D(w). \tag*{(4)}

Combining (2), (3), and (4) and writing f=fDf=f_D gives

Φ(D′)−Φ(D)=Sf(v)−Sf(u)−1.(5)\Phi(D')-\Phi(D)=S_f(v)-S_f(u)-1. \tag*{(5)}

By minimality of DD, Sf(v)≥Sf(u)+1S_f(v)\ge S_f(u)+1 on every arc (u,v)(u,v). □

This translates to a (Δ(G)+1)(\Delta(G)+1)-additive-coloring in polynomial time:

Corollary 2.2. After setting av=1a_v=1 for all v∈Vv\in V as in theorem 2.1, start from any orientation and repeatedly reverse arcs whose endpoints have equal neighborhood sums. This process terminates at an additive coloring after at most

∣E(G)∣((Δ(G)+1)2−1)|E(G)|\left((\Delta(G)+1)^2-1\right)

reversals.

Proof. Each reversal decreases Φ\Phi by exactly 1 by (5). Through the process, we maintain 1≤fD(v)≤Δ(G)+11\le f_D(v)\le\Delta(G)+1. Hence

∣E(G)∣≤Φ(D)≤∣E(G)∣(Δ(G)+1)2.|E(G)|\le\Phi(D)\le|E(G)|(\Delta(G)+1)^2.
